Mid-Year Update from the Alliance President

Winston Churchill is credited for the quote that says, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” This is certainly true for me as I think about the Alliance and the benefits I have enjoyed as a member and volunteer.

Volunteers serving the Alliance on the board, committees, provider sections, special interest groups and other key roles have always been, and continue to be, the backbone of this organization. The goal is that together we connect healthcare education professionals to promote best practices that improve patient care, which is our mission.

Allow me to describe some of the progress we are making together with staff support this year.

Using the strategic plan as a guide, significant progress has been made in the areas of strategic outreach, professionalism and membership. Each of these pillars of the strategic plan is broken down into goals with specific committees working together and in partnership to make these goals reality!

Strategic outreach is necessary to promote and strengthen alliances to advance the mission and vision. Members of the board, staff and many of our active members have been attending meetings with external stakeholders in the education/accreditation and quality spaces. We are aware of and following the changing environment to stay in touch with the issues that matter to members.  


Professionalism goals are in place to define and promote the continuing healthcare education profession and professionals.

  • Education Committee members are identifying increasing ways to utilize the National Learning Competencies for individual assessment, hiring and performance evaluation.
  • The CHCP Commission is in the process of updating the certification exam to be completed by the first quarter of 2018. The current exam and the associate exam are available now. Information about how to sign up is available on the website.
  • The Advocacy Committee has sent out a “value” survey to members in order to build resources and tools to assist them in demonstrating value to organizations and other stakeholders. They have also been developing education to coach and support professionals engaging in conversations with policy makers. The Advocacy Committee compiled examples of educational activities from members to show the connection between performance improvement and CE. Representatives presented this information to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) from the Alliance, the CME Coalition, CMSS and other organizations in discussions related to the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA). The group shared the position that accredited continuing education should be included in the definition of clinical practice improvement and is justified by our educational outcomes data that meets the criteria that aligns with quality measures.

Progress in the area of membership this year includes:

  • A revised membership model with resources that are relevant for today’s market to build and engage interprofessional membership. New opportunities for memberships and group discounts are being developed.
  • New opportunities to serve as a volunteer are opening, and members are encouraged to check out the website and find areas that fit your skill set and interest. Watch your emails for committee vacancies.
  • Education: A Product Portfolio survey and analysis was presented to the board in May to ensure that we have products and resources that meet the needs of our members and are relevant to our everyday work environment.
  • New educational curriculums are being designed for members requesting a CHCP certification review course series, leadership education and/or procedural education.
  • Tailored for novices from all CEhp backgrounds, Fundamentals 101 will begin on Oct. 20, 2017. This is an excellent resource for employers.
  • Our Membership Mentoring Task Force is partnering with the Maitland Mentorship Award Task Force to review and redesign our mentoring program.
  • The Research Committee has completed an Environmental Scan survey and results are being finalized to share with members. They are planning a second survey in collaboration with the Quality Initiative Committee with the help of focus groups.
  • Improved methods for communication to and among members are now available. This includes website redesigns and the new content hub for the Almanac. The content hub allows more flexibility with content that can be frequently updated as hot topics arise.
  • The Alliance Industry Summit (AIS) was held in Philadelphia in May with higher registration than last year, wonderful presentations and an engaging format. Networking and opportunities to connect continue to build each year.
  • Registration is now open for our second Quality and Innovation Summit (QIS) to be hosted at a leading healthcare facility. Last year’s event at Cleveland Clinic was spectacular. Plans are shaping up for this year’s event at Intermountain Healthcare in Park City, Utah, to keep raising our expectations as well as our abilities as providers and supporters to think quality.
  • Provider sections and special interest groups report that efforts are underway to continue to connect with their members and provide collaborative and networking opportunities. Join the conversation through our website community page.

As a volunteer for the Alliance, I am learning, inspired and challenged in ways that allow me to “make a living” more effectively. My work and my life are the better for it!
