Re-Thinking the Design of EMS Continuing Education Programs

Cambridge Consulting Group chief strategy officer Mic Gunderson recommends individualized continuing medical education (CME) programs for emergency medical services (EMS) professionals. He suggests this is necessary because "their knowledge and skills will vary considerably based on the types and frequencies of their clinical experiences and the roles they played on scene; as well as their efforts to study and practice throughout the year." To close experiential, knowledge, or skills gaps resulting from a one-size-fits-all CME model, Gunderson advises program providers to assess an EMS professional's knowledge and skills across their full scope of practice. The results can highlight any potential problem areas, as well as the professional's relative strengths and weaknesses, as a foundation for the CME prescription. If the professional's knowledge and skills dramatically surpass minimum standards, the prescription may involve an update class and the choice of opting out of refresher courses in favor of more advanced classes or a wide range of interest-based electives. The CME prescription can also accommodate the need for refresher classes in a specific subject area, while still allowing for advanced classes in subjects where professionals are stronger.
