The Stanford's Virtual Learning Conference Experience

The Stanford Center for Continuing Medical Education's (CME) Live 2020 virtual conference was designed to ease the transition from face-to-face educational offerings to online learning settings. Themes covered technology supporting education and accreditation compliance, online learning strategies and instruction, narratives of pivot from the organizational perspective, and various contexts, productivity, and business of CME/continuing professional development. Top-rated presentations at the event included "Mind Mapping, Creativity, and Systemizing Innovation" by Open Genius CEO Chris Griffiths. Future of work strategist Heather E. McGowan's "Future of Work is Adaptation" talk promoted the notion that the COVID-19 pandemic is an opportunity to discard old concepts and evolve understanding of leadership and skill-building, finding purpose through work. The presentation cited lifelong learning and skills retooling as crucial to realizing potential. A poll of CME Live attendees found 81% would recommend the virtual conference to a friend or a colleague. Nearly 90% were likely to view recorded sessions if provided access. According to Stanford Center for CME Strategic Adviser Mila Kostic, CHCP, FACEHP, in order to develop effective virtual events, organizers should keep learners' needs and wants at the forefront; design for longitudinal learning; use technology to enable engagement and employ active learning approaches; intentionally allocate space and time for social interaction of learners and provide support for extending the social engagement; and incorporate time and materials for faculty training and practice.
