Impact of a Formal Educational Skill-Building Program Based on the ARCC Model to Enhance Evidence-Based Practice Competency in Nurse Teams

A recent initiative evaluated a five-day continuing education skill-building program's effectiveness in fostering evidence-based practice (EBP) competence, practice and culture sustainability over time. The effort was guided by the Advancing Research and Clinical Practice Through Close Collaboration Model. The project team included EBP expertise from the Air Force Medical Service and the Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for EBP in Nursing and Healthcare at Ohio State University. Nursing teams were solicited to participate and complete the program with deployment of EBP projects over the following year. Their EBP knowledge, skills, competencies and beliefs increased significantly and were retained over the year. The authors concluded that "a team-based EBP skill-building program was an effective strategy for building EBP competence, practice and culture," with the direct support of leadership and infrastructure playing a critical role.
