Association of a Multisite Interprofessional Education Initiative With Quality of Primary Care

A new study analyzed U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) electronic health record data to determine whether there is an association between resident participation in a large, multisite, interprofessional education (IPE) quality improvement project and quality of care. The researchers compared patients of residents in five VA academic primary care clinics that participated in the Centers of Excellence in Primary Care Education (CoEPCE) initiative with patients cared for by residents in five regionally matched non-CoEPCE clinics using data for the three academic years prior to and four academic years after CoEPCE was introduced. CoEPCE was launched in 2011 to encourage IPE among physician, nurse practitioner, pharmacist, and psychologist trainees. The analysis was conducted over the course of one year, with more than 44,500 patients contributing nearly 108,000 patient–years. CoEPCE training was associated with improvements in the number of diabetic patients with poor blood glucose control, annual renal testing among patients with diabetes, prescription of high-risk medications among patients aged 65 years and older, and timely mental health referrals. Additionally, fewer patients cared for by CoEPCE residents experienced hospitalization for an ambulatory care-sensitive condition compared with patients cared for by non-CoEPCE residents in non-CoEPCE clinics.
