Measuring the Effect of a Competency-Based Education Conference for PAs and NPs

A recent study sought to assess the effectiveness of a competency-based continuing medical education conference model for physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs). The technique combined a pretest/post-test evaluation of knowledge and procedural assessment for six clinical skills as well as an open-ended survey to gauge the value of an educational conference for PAs and NPs in an urban academic healthcare facility. Substantial improvement in knowledge scores and all six clinical skill procedures was observed from pre- to post-test. Participants said they either obtained new techniques and knowledge or improved current knowledge and skills. These findings suggest the competency-based conference model could be a viable methodology for delivery of evidence-based learning and informed practice, in addition to embedding reflective practice and commitment to personal growth.
