Creating Our Future Through Lifelong Learning

AORN Journal (07/19) Vol. 110, No. 1, P. 2 Merlino, Missi

Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) President Missi Merlino, MHA, RN-BC, CNOR, CSSM, writes that nurses must commit to lifelong learning, either by obtaining degrees or certifications, or through participation in continuing education opportunities. The first step involves identifying a suitable lifelong learning strategy, both personally and professionally. "Embracing the value of education to help improve patient outcomes can be the catalyst for nurses pursuing a [bachelor of science in nursing] or advanced degree," Merlino notes. AORN offers free continuing education opportunities for members, including resources of information on becoming a certified perioperative nurse, ambulatory surgery center administrator training, webinars, nurse executive leadership series, and the OR Excellence Conference. Merlino advises that "each nurse should evaluate the source of the information to ensure he or she is using the latest evidence-based practices to improve patient safety and increase his or her knowledge of perioperative nursing."
