Creating Effective and Efficient Pediatric-Specific CME Content

Although states mandate the type of continuing medical education (CME) required for licensing, CME providers are not obligated to create content relevant to all specialties. For pediatric providers, a targeted needs assessment identified a dearth of pediatric-specific CME activities that meet the state's requirement for pain management and end-of-life issues. Working with content experts, webinars conforming to adult learning principles were developed and completed by nearly 600 in 30 states, and CME credit was awarded. To meet ongoing state licensing requirements, 44 percent of students had completed similar types of activities before; however, a lack of pediatric modules meant that nearly three-quarters of those individuals engaged in activities concentrating on adult medicine. "Until states and regulators allow for more flexibility in satisfying licensing requirements, it will be incumbent on those who create CME to develop educational activities that satisfy state requirements while aligning with the principles of effective CME," writes Benjamin A. Nelson, MD, of MassGeneral Hospital for Children in Boston. "With strategic planning, this is possible and will hopefully empower physicians to engage in CME without resorting to 'checking a box.'"
